The draft to the Declaration of Independence is submitted to the Continental Congress.

The "Committee of Five" (Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston) formally submitted their draft of Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

1870

Congress establishes the first federal holidays.

Congress establishes the first federal holidays--New Years Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

1894

Labor Day becomes an official U.S. holiday.

President Grover Cleveland signed legislation into law making Labor Day an official holiday as the result of the violent Pullman Strike. The law was intended to reconcile with workers and recognize the economic and social achievements of American laborers.

Congress passes the Spooner Act.

Congress passes the Spooner Act, authorizing President Theodore Roosevelt to acquire rights from Colombia for the Panama Canal. Columbia's legislature rejected the Hay-Herrán Treaty prompting Roosevelt to deploy U.S. warships to block Colombian troops. Eventually, Columbia granted the U.S. control of the Canal.
